And when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even as with the prophets of old, whom they had acast out, and stoned, and slain; and they also sought his life, that they might take it away. 1 Nephi 1:2
Nephi, the writer of 1 Nephi, claims his father Lehi, a prophet, was stoned and killed during the reign of King Zedekiah because he prophesied that Jerusalem would be destroyed.
Would a prophet like Lehi predicting such a thing be killed? Not by Jews.
A list of the other prophets from that time frame reveals they were not. Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Haggai, Zechariah, Isaiah, Micah, all fall within this range.
Not one was killed by Jews. Zechariah was killed by idol worshippers (2 Chronicles 24) and Jezebel, evil queen, killed a bunch of prophets (1 Kings 18).
In fact, when a prophet showed up in town the Jews were afraid to kill them and many times gave them the opportunity to speak.
Only false prophets were killed.
A sword against her false prophets! They will become fools. A sword against her warriors! They will be filled with terror. Jeremiah 50:36
Jewish believers of that day took this command very seriously from the Bible, spoken by God.
"If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.” Deuteronomy 18:19-20
- Listen very carefully to what they had to say because the people will be held accountable.
- Kill the prophets who are not led by God.
