“At
that time Michael, the
great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of
distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But
at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will
be delivered.” Daniel 12:1
Michael is
an angel mentioned here in the book of Daniel, the book of Jude and
Revelation. He’s always seen fighting,
defending and protecting the people.
Michael’s
role is as a commander of an army of angels.
One term for that, used in Jude, is an archangel, which means a chief of
angels. This word is only used twice in
the Bible (the other 1 Thessalonians 4:16).
Then
war broke out in heaven. Michael and
his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought
back. Revelation 12:7
Gabriel is
the only other angel given a name in the Bible and could also be a high ranking
angelic official. Gabriel is presented
as more of a courier, passing information along, while Michael is mentioned
when there’s a struggle happening.
