Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will
come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will
say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died,
everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 2 Peter 3:3-4
Jesus
promised to return and judge the earth at some point in time. He told the apostles he would be with them
always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). In Revelation 3:11, 20 and 22, he said “I am
coming soon.”
So
where is Jesus? People are getting
impatient 2,000 years later wondering what “soon” really means. Peter said in his second letter that even
back then in the first century, decades after Jesus’ departure from earth,
people scoffed, saying thirty years was too long and Jesus cannot keep his
promises. These kind of scoffers will
always be around, Peter promised, and they are.
However,
we should be glad Jesus hasn’t returned, because when he does, no one will have
a chance to accept Christ and spend eternity in heaven, including your friends
and family.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will
disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth
and everything done in it will be laid bare. 2 Peter 3:10
When Jesus returns, it will happen
fast and it will happen thoroughly, reducing everything to ash with a complete
reboot—a new heaven and a new earth for those who believe in Christ.
