What shall
we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have
known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what
coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by
the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law,
sin was dead. Romans 7:7-8
The law
(which started with Moses) pointed out sin and determined what was right and
what was wrong. By doing so, it
activated a response from sin—temptation.
Even the first law ever imposed by God, don’t eat from this tree,
prompted Satan to tempt Adam and Eve to sin.
But the
law does a good thing by pointing out what can hurt us and what can benefit
us. Don’t touch, don’t eat, don’t stray
all keep us where we need to be and not harming ourselves and our relationship
with God. The law is good even though it
points out bad and influences bad to make us do bad things.
