Opposition
arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was
called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and
Asia—who began to argue with Stephen. But they could not stand up against
the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke. Acts 6:9-10
We are not
sure. We know they were Jews and they
didn’t like Jesus. They weren’t very
educated in the scriptures, because Stephen intimidated them. Some believe they were Jewish slaves, possibly
on the run from their masters. They were
religious bullies and murderers.
