And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:28-31
There are
different roles in the church—pastors, teachers, administration. These each come with them different spiritual
gifts. While our roles can change, can
we change and can our spiritual gift design change too?
Paul said
in 1 Corinthians 12:31 to “eagerly desire the greater gifts.” Can we ask for a spiritual gift and receive
it? Why not. God determines the spiritual gifts and
distributes them to each as he has a need.
If he needs you to be spiritually gifted as your role in the body of
Christ changes, he will give you what you need to accomplish it. But if he doesn’t give you that gift, then
you must recognize his authority in the matter.
We link
our spiritual gifts to our passions, feeling that the spirit ignites our
interest in a particular area. That’s
the premise of a spiritual gifts test.
Many
mature believers who take spiritual gift tests say that they see their gifts
changing over time. But, most agree they
stay pretty much the same. It’s possible
your spiritual gifts can change, but more than likely they will stay the same.
