“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” Matthew 6:5
Praying in public is not a
problem. The problem is one’s motivation
to pray in public. Why would someone
pray in public? Is it to draw attention
to someone’s eloquence and passion or to draw people closer to God? Hypocritical prayers are not spoken to
benefit those who are listening or to really to address God, only to selfishly
benefit the one praying so others will think they are more religious than
others. But a sincere prayer, prayed in
public, can be honored by God (such as Daniel when the government shut down
prayer).
