Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Matthew 4:1-3
Satan knew that Jesus would be
rendered insufficient as the perfect sacrifice on the cross if he caved in to
one temptation. Once Jesus publicly
announced Himself at the baptism, Satan had to get to work to bring Jesus down.
After trying to tempt Jesus three
times, Satan realized there was no way He could cause Jesus to morally fall. The Bible never said that Satan tempted Jesus
again after this point.
