And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:31-32
Every
sin and slander can be forgiven, Jesus said, but one and that’s blasphemy
against the Spirit. What does that mean?
It
can’t mean simply saying “I blaspheme the Holy Spirit.” Blaspheming is verbal or willful rejection of
God. The Holy Spirit’s job is to
convict, instruct and impress the truth of Jesus on a person’s heart. If someone rejects the Holy Spirit, over and
over until their death, that sin cannot be forgiven and the person will be
ushered away in judgment forever.
