Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
When the
disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be
saved?”
Jesus
looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with
God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:23-26
Jesus answered a rich man’s question
about salvation then finished off the discussion by talking about how hard it
is for rich people to get saved. Jesus
just challenged the rich man to sell everything and follow him. The rich man refused. Why?
The rich man found life (salvation) in his material wealth. His money supplied all his needs, not his
God. Rich people can get into heaven,
but they have a tougher road to get there.
Their financial portfolio gives them earthly comfort and power and
distracts them from the one who has eternal power.
