“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:
“‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me
all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a
temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Ezra 1:2
By reading Ezra, it seems King Cyrus
was “a believer.” The prophecy from
Isaiah (44:28-45:1) clearly announced Cyrus as the future king 100 years before
his reign. Cyrus was certainly amazed by
this so he allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. Now, did he fully believe in God and God
alone? Not clear. Back then, people
believed in many gods and while this God may have been first on the list, it’s
unclear if Cyrus believed in Him exclusively.
