As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:1-4
Someone who gives a higher
percentage of their income, when they have very little, shows a greater faith
of God’s provision. Two people could
give $200 and both could have different motivation and circumstance behind
it. The heart of a poor person could be
wrong also expecting God to take care of them while a rich person could give
out of gratitude and love.
This poor widow had very little
going for her, so for her to give pennies showed a great faith and love for
God. How we give out of our poverty is a
good indication on how we will give out of our wealth. God could entrust us with wealth if he sees
us giving when we’re rich.
It always goes back to the heart. The percentage of giving will coincide with
the level of trust we have in God to take care of us as we give our wealth
away.
