When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For
I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom
of God comes.” Luke 22:14-18
At the last supper,
Jesus made a two statements before they took the communion saying, “I will not
eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God” and “I will not
drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” When will the kingdom of God come? When Jesus returns to earth and all believers
are in heaven.
At that moment,
there will be a celebration over Jesus’ final victory. Is it communion? There isn’t really any need to remember what
Jesus did since the fulfillment of what Jesus did will be complete when all
believers arrive in heaven and we will have Jesus in front of us in heaven as a
constant reminder. Call it a celebration
instead of communion, but there will be one initial moment when we celebrate
with the cup as Jesus raises it, marking a final completion of God’s kingdom
work.
