But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy. No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise. And the sound was heard far away. Ezra 3:12-13
It’s been over seventy years since
they were in Jerusalem. God punished
them for their sins but promised them they would return. That promise was now fulfilled. Nearly 500 years had passed since
David/Solomon’s original temple and now that dream, once destroyed, could be
rebuilt again. Some in attendance
remember the old temple, saw its destruction, now they became emotional seeing
it all restored.
